Are we family already?
Two months ago, Mr. and Mrs. Mouring Dove comandeered Freckles' favorite thriving hanging Boston Fern to use to raise their family of four little fledglings. She patiently watched while tender leaves drooped and dried. When the babies dropped out to nestle amongst the ivy while learning to fly, Freckles again watered the suffering plant. Even though the center was smished down, all that accumulated "fertilizer" kicked in and the Boston fern became lovely again under the shade cloth. Alas, the dove parents returned to start a second familly. With a vangence, Freckles chased them away, for a while. They returned. She moved the hanging fern closer to the patio door and substituted an empty pot in its place...not good enough. Mr. Dove flew into our house and perched on the ceramic pitcher (from Katz) on the refrigerator and glowered, scolding Freckles until she moved the Boston fern (complete with setting Mrs. Dove) back to its original spot. There Mrs Dove continues to "sit" and ponder the world around her. Mr. Dove is happy now and sings to her from his perch on the roof top next door. Resigned to fate, Freckles now waters from the back side under the bird. Said bird doesn't even flinch, just nestles further down into her nest. Do you think expected little ones will crack out of their shells with webbed feet? Time will tell. Meanwhile we enjoy his daily serenade.
